Interior decorating trends for autumn/winter 2018

As we say goodbye to last season’s biggest interior trends, it is time to take note of the new season’s most wanted décor ready to revamp your home for the autumn/winter season. Just like with fashion, autumn/winter also brings with it a slew of new décor trends that allow your space to feel new again. We look to the catwalk for some interior decorating inspiration and then think of how to integrate them into homes this autumn. Runway looks that have been dominating the catwalk often translate into our homes in the way of colour, fabric, and pattern.

What trends can you expect this season?

With the cooler weather fast approaching, it is time to start thinking about updating your home to accommodate the seasonal change. Updating your home for the cooler months can be as simple as introducing fresh soft furnishings in on-trend colours. You will get to see classic and simple pieces contrast with vibrant colours and daring patterns.

On the runway, we saw the returning trend of the business suit. This was depicted as a combination of comfort and sophistication that translates in the exaggerated suit jackets and coats.

We will see lots of big chunky knitted products, so think about adding a chunky knit throw or cushions as a simple way of updating your space. Think comfortable, deep lounges and armchairs, slipcovers, big, chunky knits for throws and large-sized scatter cushions. A chunky knitted throw will instantly cosy up your home for the cooler months.  To finish, add oversized pendant lighting, and artwork to bring this trend to life.

Beddings and soft furnishings can be cosied up for autumn/winter with layers of blankets, velvet cushions, and shag-pile rugs to create that homemade “huggy” feeling.

As the days get darker, colours trends tend to get darker

With Pantone's colour of the year being a rich purple; UltraViolet, and the colour palette being of dark autumn hues, expect darker, richer interior accents.

Autumn/winter trends are all about adding deep, rich hues to your home decor to transform it into a welcoming yet chic retreat. If you are nervous about the idea of introducing deep colours to your space, you needn't be. In many cases, the difference between a bland home and one that seems inviting and warm is the addition of colour in an elegant and delicate manner. Decorating around brightly coloured elements may be a challenge. You must avoid using other bold colours in the same room, as some colours create visual conflict.

Start by working with different shades in the same family to create a room that is both interesting and unified. Then, don’t be afraid to play with contrasting textures, fabrics and materials. These will help to add some dimension to the interior design project. Last but not least, if you want to spice it up, introduce small pops of colour. To introduce, start with soft furnishings such as cushions, to add accents of textures.

Remember to offset the rich colours with a soft, complementary neutral colour to create balance.

Hopefully, these winter interior trends have made you as excited for winter to come. Will you be using any of these trends in your own home? Or are there any others you are excited to be using this autumn season?
