Everything You Need to Furnish Your First Home

There’s a lot to consider when the time comes to furnish your first home. You may have recently moved out of your parents’ house, setting off to university to start life on your own. You may have gotten married or decided to rent or buy a place with your significant other. Whether you’re moving into a flat or a house, there is nothing quite like getting your own place. It can be stressful to know what you’ll need to furnish your first home. Even more so if you are starting from scratch. Before you get overwhelmed, it helps to remember that you don’t have to get absolutely everything before your move. You can start with a few basics and then go from there. Keep reading to find out which essentials you’ll need.

How to Furnish Your First Home

Here are some of the absolute must-haves to furnish your first home.

Furniture

Of course, you will need furniture. But you don’t have to go for the high-end stuff just yet. You will need a comfortable bed and perhaps some bedside tables. If your place doesn’t have built-in cupboards, you may need to look at dressers or other storage. For your lounge, you can go with a couch and a chair or two (or an L-shaped unit to save more space). You can even use outdoor chairs or dining chairs if you can’t afford armchairs. You can get a small dining table that doubles up as a desk if you have enough space. Otherwise, a fold-up table or small patio table will work, too.

Appliances

This will include large and small appliances. Obviously, a fridge is essential. You can find a small fridge/freezer combo or even a bar fridge for now. If your place doesn’t have a built-in oven, you can look for a free-standing oven. A basic microwave is also important. You can aim to get a washing machine later if you are on a budget or you don’t have space. For small appliances, you’ll need a kettle, toaster and perhaps an electric frying pan.

Kitchenware

Then it’s time to stock up on kitchenware basics. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on fancy crockery and dinner sets. Basic sets of 4 will be fine for starters. Look for cups, plates, cutlery, storage, glasses, breadboards, utensils and anything else you think you’ll actually use on a day to day basis.

Over and beyond these things, you’ll also need to look for linen, curtains, decor, towels, bathroom storage and other things that make a house a home. On a tight budget?
