What is Classified as Bedroom Linen

    • Flat or Top Sheet - A sheet between you and your comforter, blanket, or quilt.
    • Fitted sheet or the bottom sheet - A sheet that goes over your mattress and has an elastic edge.
    • Bedspread - A pretty covering that usually goes all the way to the floor and covers the whole bed. Bedspreads are often made of cotton, chenille, wool, or polyester.
    • Coverlet - A decorative piece of fabric that does not reach the floor and does not usually cover the pillows. Most of the time, these are bed decorations that can be put on top of bedspreads. They can also be used as foot runners at the foot of the bed.
    • Blankets - Used to keep you warm. Most blankets are made of wool, cotton, polyester, microfiber plush, or a mix of these materials.
    • Comforter - A bed cover that is stuffed with fibres or down to keep you warm. Cotton or polyester is used to make most of them.
    • Duvet - Usually white and filled with down or an alternative to down.
    • Duvet cover - A cover that encases and protects a duvet. Duvet covers are generally very decorative and are available in a wide selection of colours and styles.
    • Pillows - Not only do pillows have different kinds of fillings, but they also come in different shapes and sizes:
      • Continental Pillow - A big square decorative pillow that leans back against the headboard.
      • Sleeping Pillow - A rectangular pillow that you lay your head on when you sleep. Pillows come in three sizes—standard, queen, and king— and can be filled with down or synthetic fibre.
      • Decorative pillows - Also called a throw pillow, is a small pillow that comes in many shapes, sizes, and colours to decorate a bed.
      • Bolster Pillow - A bolster tube-shaped pillow that can be used to support your lower back when you sit up in bed to read, but it is more often used as a decorative pillow.
    • Pillowcase - Used to cover a sleeping pillow.
    • Pillow shams - Covers for pillows that are meant to look nice. They often have trims, ruffles, flanges, or cording.
    • Some of the most common types of extra bedding accessories are:
      • Dust Ruffle, Bed Skirt, or Valance – A decorative piece of fabric that goes between the mattress and box springs. It goes all the way to the floor on the sides and bottom of the mattress to cover up the box spring, but they also add softness and style to a room.
      • Throw Blanket - A throw or toss blanket is smaller than a regular blanket and is used to add extra warmth at the foot of the bed.
      • Mattress cover – A layer of padding is put on top of the mattress and under the bottom sheet.

Different Fabrics Used for Bedroom Linen

The most common types of sheeting are lightweight, white, solid-colour or printed plain weave, satin weave, flannel cotton or cotton/polyester blends.

Linen and silk can also be used.

Goose or duck down and other feathers are often used to make duvets, comforters, and quilts. Most quilts and comforters that are not made of down are filled with batting made of cotton, wool, or polyester. These are cheaper and easier to clean than down or feathers.

Blankets are usually made of thickly woven or knitted wool, cotton, acrylic, or other microfiber synthetics, or mixes of these.

Fabric made with cotton warp and weft, cotton warp and lyocell weft, or cotton warp and lyocell weft is much better in every way and is best for making bed linens.

How to Care for Bedroom Linen

Getting into a bed with clean sheets is one of the best feelings in the world, but you need to know how each type needs to be washed and cared for.

With about a third of our lives spent in bed, leaving behind about 56 hours of sweat, oil, and dead skin cells every week, you should try to wash your sheets every two weeks, and if you can, every week.

There are major differences between washing clothes and washing bedding. First of all, it is much bigger, so do not put too much in your washer and do not mix them with other clothes.

Setting the wash cycle and temperature for each type of linen will be different:

Most likely, your bed sheets are made of cotton because it lasts long, does not cost much, and are easy to take care of. Cotton sheets can usually be washed in any washing machine cycle and with regular laundry detergent, but it is best to check the care label to make sure.

Silk sheets are luxurious, indulgent, and romantic, as well as hypoallergenic. Because silk is made from a soft fibre made by silkworms, it needs to be taken care of in a special way. Use lukewarm water, a gentle, biodegradable detergent, and a delicate wash cycle on the washing machine. You should only spin them through once to dry them. Keep the sheets out of the direct sun so they do not fade.

For cold winters, flannel sheets are the best choice. It is a type of cotton whose fibres have been combed to make them fluff up and be able to trap heat. Use cold water and the gentle cycle on your washing machine to clean flannel sheets.

Polyester is an inexpensive man-made fibre that is usually mixed with cotton. Sheets should be washed in warm water (not hot) with mild detergent.

Most blends are made of polyester and cotton, but you might also find blends of cotton and bamboo or cotton and rayon. Cotton-blend sheets should be washed in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a gentle setting on the washer.

Fabrics can also be made from bamboo, but most sheets that say "bamboo" are actually made of rayon, which is a silky, soft, and durable material. Rayon means that the bamboo pulp has been dissolved, re-solidified, and spun into a thread. The best way to wash and dry bamboo sheets is with cold water and low heat.

    How to Choose Bedroom Linen

Your bedding should feel pleasing, enhance the look and feel of your bedroom, and help you to sleep well.

When looking for Bedroom Linen, you should consider the following:

    • Quality – Choose the best quality linen within your available budget. Look at the type of fibre, yarn quality, and thread count. The total thread count should be above 150 with a higher warp than weft.
    • Finishes – Make sure about its colour fastness.
    • Reputed manufacturers – buy the linen from a known, good brand.
    • Size – Purchase the correct size of linen since the wrong sizes can hamper use and appearance.

    Standard Sizes of Sheets Are:

    Single 203 cm. x 274 cm.

    Double 224 cm. x 274cm.

    King size 295 cm. x 274 cm.

    Pillowcases:

    Standard 50 cm. x 75 cm.

    King size 50 cm. x 100 cm.

    Duvets:

    Single duvet 135 x 200 cm

    Double duvet 200 x 200 cm

    King duvet 230 x 220 cm

    Super King duvet 260 x 220 cm

    Emperor duvet   290 x 235 cm

At MHC World you will find the correct sizes of all reputable brands of bed linen in every style and colour you may dream of.
