Everything You Need to Furnish a Student Dorm Room

Whether staying on-campus or at an off-campus lodging, furnishing a student dorm room is the best way to make the space feel like home. These rooms are not only for sleeping at night. They’re also for studying, relaxing, catching up with friends and getting some much-needed peace and quiet in an often busy dorm. With a few key pieces, it will be easy to furnish a student dorm room, whatever the size.

Furnishing a Student Dorm Room

There are three main areas in a student dorm room: a place to sleep, a place to keep things organised, a place to study and a place to relax. With that in mind, here are the key furnishings needed for this space.

Bed

Most dorms have small rooms and single beds are usually the way to go. If the room is a bit bigger, you can go for a twin bed. You can save space and make the room look bigger by placing your bed in the corner of your room. Having a single bedside table or small side table will free up space. If you are lucky enough to have a large room, go for a bedroom suite. Add a neutral duvet cover or bedroom linen in your chosen style, add a few cushions and a rug, and you’ll have a great sleeping space.

Storage

Some dorm rooms may have built-in cupboards. If yours doesn’t, you will need to look at getting a small cupboard or a chest of drawers. This can be placed in the other corner of your room, opposite your bed or behind the door if you have enough room to open the door. A good way to save space is to look at storage that slides out from under your bed. Fold-out storage will also work well.

Desk

You will need somewhere to study and work. You can set up a desk against a wall, next to your cupboard or chest of drawers. A small, compact desk that is big enough for your laptop or PC will be ideal. Use an office chair or get a comfortable dining chair that can double up as seating for guests.

Seating

Seating is often a challenge in small rooms. If you use a double-duty chair for your desk and visitors, you’ll save a lot of space. You can also use folding chairs that can be stored out of sight when not in use. Or you could go with a sleeper couch that is used as a couch in the day and a bed at night. Another option with a single or twin bed against a wall is to add lots of pillows and turn it into a daybed that can be used as a couch.

Once you’ve got your furniture sorted, you can personalise your room with rugs, curtains, bedding and everything else that you need to make your space your own.
